If you have ever watched Fixer Upper on HGTV you know that Chip Gaines’ favorite day is “Demo Day.” He loves gutting homes to make way for his wife Joanna’s killer design in one crazy day! On Bryarton Farm our Demo takes many, many days. Not having a crew of workers combined with our commitment to carefully saving the historic elements of the farmhouse means that we unfortunately had to name this post “Demo Day[s]”. (more…)

I confess that laundry is not something I love to do. It is a simple enough task, but remembering to move the clothes from the washer into the dryer always slips my mind. Folding the clothes seems to always fall to the end of my priority list. Having a pretty laundry room that makes doing laundry an enjoyable experience is my strategy for combatting this problem. We have had this dining table for a little over two years, and had grown accustomed to the large crack on the top. However, when I found some scraps of lumber with an interesting patina in our late 1800’s barn, it seemed like the perfect solution for a new table top. So we spent Saturday giving this table a much needed makeover.

When you are in the midst of adversity it is so hard to be thankful for what you are going through. This post marks 30 years from my first surgery to my last. Looking back, I never dreamed that being born with a cleft lip would someday be something I would openly share with the world, let alone thank God for. I see now how my journey can be both educational and inspirational and that is why I am taking a break from my usual art and design topics to transparently celebrate the beauty of being different. All summer we have been trying to figure out the best way to repair all of the damage to our neglected farmhouse and barn. We have so many things, including the kitchen, that need to be addressed on such a small budget. However, we are currently spending all of our time and money addressing issues that were hidden behind vinyl and aluminum.
