The things that Cami Grace is obsessed with right now are tutus, princesses, and “Old McDonald Had a Farm”. This made it tough to decide what theme I was going to choose for her 2nd birthday, which we celebrated this weekend. I ended up combining them all to create a Farm Princess theme. (more…)

When we bought the farmhouse one of our favorite things about the place was that there was so much original wood. Often the older a home is, the more “quick fix” disasters there seem to be. If the current home owner is not willing or has no understanding of the homes historical value, serious damage to irreplaceable details will sadly be committed. (more…)

When we first moved to the farmhouse, I was concerned about how Cami Grace would react not only to her new surroundings, but also to the constant craziness of living in a renovation zone. She has surprised me with her willingness to help and with her busyness. My lil’ helper is adorable, but sometimes not very helpful. (more…)

In our Victorian cottage in Georgia Cami Grace’s room was huge I had so many decorating options. She had large windows, 12ft ceilings, a closet, and even a fire place. The perfect princess room. (more…)

With Michael working a full time job, me a full time mommy/artist, and both of us doing the farmhouse reno there is not a whole lot of time for romance. We are trying to be intentional, though, in taking little opportunities to stop and share sweet moments. (more…)

Meet Stewart, the large field mouse we found in a dresser.

I got this cool antique dresser for a crazy $35 because all the drawers were falling apart and some hardware was missing. When you use a dresser as a sink you have to cut holes in the drawers or take them out to make room for the pluming. This is why repurposing a broken dresser makes a great vanity for a sink.

I finally snapped today.

After living in a big mess of dirt, insulation, and tools I had a melt down. For a month and a half now our family has been living in a house with no kitchen, an out house like bathroom situation, and ( up until a few days ago) no washer or dryer. I had been doing pretty well reminding myself why we are doing this and (more…)

When we moved I sold a lot of my hand painted furniture to lighten our load. This made it a little harder when I started nesting in our new place. To solve our end table and toy storage issue I picked up this 70’s beauty from a local thrift shop for $7.

“What is a preacher’s door,” You may ask? Well, I will show you. When we first bought the farmhouse we were quite puzzled by the two front doors so close to each other. When we asked some local knowledgable people they helped it all make sense. In the 1800s, before TV and internet, you’re monthly visit of the local preacher was a special event. It was so special the farmers of means would build their homes in such a way that the visiting preacher or visiting guests would not have to walk through their simple living areas but through a designated door that went straight into the formal parlor.
The door on the left leads straight into what is our dining room. The door on the right is the preacher’s door leading into the living room.

This what the preacher’s door looked like from the inside when we first moved in. Cami Grace is standing in the dining room. The archway is a 1930s addition which opened up what once was a set of small french doors.

We didn’t need two front doors and this corner of the living room was kind of a dead zone so we turned it into our office area.
I chose a Mexican harvest table and some discontinued chairs as our office furniture to create a partners desk with character. We love having a space to work together while watching Cami Grace play, however there is a bit of a storage issue. We will have to work on that.

Before

This often the problem when one buys panels from a department store like I did. They are not made to fit a victorian window or anything but the simplest windows and low ceilings. Here is a short and simple explanation of an idea I came up with to fix this problem in my farmhouse on a very tight budget… (more…)
