We purchased the 1893 farmhouse, 1900 barn, and beautiful surrounding acreage in May of 2014. Here are a few shots of what the farm looked like Before our restoration work began. The location of the farmhouse and barn is breathtaking and we knew we wanted to restore an authentic historic farm. So even though there is a ton of work to be done on this forgotten piece of America’s heritage, we are passionately in love with Bryarton Farm.
We started almost immediately removing the vinyl siding to restore the original wood siding underneath and that is how we discovered that termites had eaten away the much of the sill plate, many of the the floor joist ends, and wall stud ends. We are so thankful that we found what was hiding under the plastic so we could save the farmhouse from falling over. Next, we restored the beautiful original windows, slowly bringing her exterior back to its former glory. The barn has been a fun restoration project to tackle as a family as well! We still need to work on the front and back porches, but after eight years of hard work we are nearly done. Here are some After photos of the exterior.
Here are some Before and After shots of the progress we have made on the inside of the farmhouse. We are doing a historic restoration on a serious budget and using real DIY style on the interior too! Our goal is to make its cozy 1400 sq. feet work for our family without compromising the story of those who came before us. Trends come and go, but staying true to the soul of your historic home is classic.
