Last summer, we were so excited to welcome our very first Bryarton-born farm animal. A single fuzzy chick was the adorable, yet pitiful part of our first attempt to raise our own “livestock.” As hobby farmers who both grew up in the country but had spent most of our adult life in the big city, my hubby and I expected to effortlessly raise up our own flock of chickens. However, as usual on our fixer upper farm, things did not go according to plan…
Only one year later the story has changed dramatically! As you might have read in our Spring at the Farm post, our barn cat Calico started off the baby boom with a litter of four sweet kittens. Unfortunately, because of a surprise cold-snap only one of these kittens lived. This was heartbreaking to Cami Grace, but she has given four times the love to the surviving kitten, whom she named Muffin.
Remember the two precious kittens my parents gave our girls for Christmas? {Read the cutest post ever – Christmas Kitties} We decided to keep Cinderella as a house cat and let Minnie Mouse join Cali in the barn. (Our three year old named the kittens after the superstars in her life.) After we noticed that Minnie was getting very fat, she disappeared for a while and soon after we heard tiny meowing sounds coming from underneath our farmhouse. Now we can sit on the couch and hear the kittens calling for their mommy 24hrs a day! We never have to wonder for long if they are still kicking…
This week our chickens also did us proud by hatching out 18 new fluff balls. Since all the grownup chickens are named after Jane Austen characters, I thought about continuing the theme with the new recruits, but Cami Grace had other plans:

We are thankful for all the sweet babies that God has blessed us with on our little farm. The girls are having so much fun playing with them and giving them love.
Farm life is such a great classroom for children that is full of lessons encouraging responsibility, respect, love, and creativity. We feel blessed to give our girls this opportunity to learn about God’s wonderful world.
As they grow older and are able to help more with the chores, we hope to give Camdyn and Avonlee the responsibility of raising a few goats, a cow, and maybe even a pony. For now, with the farmhouse renovations and art business, this baby boom is all that we can handle.
