With a new baby on the way the master bedroom has been pushed higher up the priority list. Since Avonlee will be in her bassinet in our room for the first several months of her life, we decided that we better get the master bedroom ready for her arrival.
It didn’t need much work; just painting, organizing, and decorating. The real challenge was disguising how outrageously bumpy the 122 year old plaster walls were. So I decided to use a wall treatment technique that had worked wonders in our bumpy bathroom in Georgia. Watch my three part video tutorial series below to learn a simple and inexpensive solution that I think would work to improve all kinds of wall issues.
Design Template (Video 1)
You can use any shape or design to achieve the same effect. Keep in mind that whatever you use should not compete or clash with the other elements in the space. Take into consideration all the other patterns and textures present such as the bedspread, curtains, pillows, artwork, etc.
Advantages (Video 2)
So to recap: besides being budget friendly, flaw concealing, and easy to execute, this project is great for the fickle decorator. If you get tired of your wall treatment (or the design you chose goes out of style) you can simply paint over it. This is perfect for me because I love the look of wall paper, but hate the labor intensive process involved in applying and removing it. As a girl, I also love to change my mind.
Choosing Colors (Video 3)
I know you are dying to see the finished master bedroom, but I still have a few tweaks and finishing touches I want to add to the room before the big reveal. If you liked my Morrocan inspired design element I have included a template in pdf format. Click here: Morrocan Inspired Design Template *Simply print it on card stock, cut out the center, and follow the videos.
In this half bath version of the wall treatment I used a more organic design element on one wall. This made it possible to paint it all by hand without making a template. Either way I never stress about making each shape perfect. The imperfections add interest and character; something ordinary wallpaper can’t do. Relax and have fun making a statement that camouflages the unsightly!
I hope the video series was helpful. I know I was super cheesy and a bit nervous, but this is the first video tutorial I have ever done. Please forgive all the sniffles, “ums”, and girly gestures. I think my college speech professor would kill me if he saw it, but I felt that I was better able to communicate the process this way.
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section and then check back for my answers. Next week is the Master Bedroom Reveal so you can see how this wall treatment looks on a bigger scale. Subscribe to get all our creative updates.
Sara,
I love your video! I think a video is worth a thousand words. It looked so easy it made me want to try it somewhere in my house. Can’t wait to see your bedroom. Hope your feeling a little better now.
Sara,
I’ve been considering decorating (for the first time:) my bathroom in this gorgeous blue I’ve seen all over your house. Where did you get your curtains in your living room? The wall color seems to match those. Thanks!
Yes, now that we have a much smaller house I have found that using the same color palette throughout creates a sense of unity. This makes the farmhouse feel bigger because each room seems to flow into the next. I am also able to shop my own house when changing up the décor since everything matches. The light airy blue/green is Incandecent by Valspar, but I get Walmart to make it in their store brand to save a few dollars. My living room curtains are by Martha Stewart and are from Home Depot. They were not quite long enough so I sewed some burlap ribbon to the bottom. (see my tutorial for more details)
Sara,
I have looked and have not been able to find incandescent by Valspar. Are you sure that is the right brand and color name?
Thanks, Kristen
I am looking at the paint bucket and it is Incandescent by Valspar. We purchased this paint from DIY Supply Store. It has a light base and the numbers on the stickers read: B-16.5 C-5 D-6. You might be able to get someone to make you this color using the numbers. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
Thank you! I may try that.
I love This! Someday I am going to try it!
